ABSTRACT

Drugs and diseases play an important role among the causes of secondary osteoporosis. Especially some drugs, which are used for the treatment, prevention, and control of certain chronic diseases are the causes of secondary osteoporosis. These drugs affecting bone metabolism in various ways, lead to asymptomatic osteoporosis which hides under the shadow of the primary disease and cause several complications later in time. The knowledge of the mechanisms of these drugs is important from the point of prevention and early treatment of osteoporosis. In this article the mecanisms of antacids containing aluminium, antidiabetics, antiepileptics, antineoplastics, anticoagulants, antihypertensives, glucocorticoids, immunosuppresants, proton pump inhibitors, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and thyroid hormones which cause secondary osteoporosis are given in details.
